Lesson 8

5. The Scripture is Sufficient to Prepare the Believer for life.

a.  There is a principle of Obedience:

If we follow the human viewpoint solutions we may find temporary relief but not the lasting joy that God can and does provide as we are obedient to His Word!

b.  The will of God is made up of:  the commands and principles which God has revealed in the Bible to teach us how we ought to think and live.

c.  Four crucial characteristics of God's moral will that are important for us to understand.

1.  The moral will of God is fully revealed in the Bible.

2.  The moral will of God is the expression of the character of  God.  Rom 7:12;  12:2

a.  Because of this, it produces that same character in the life of the one who obeys it and leads to fullness of life.   Ps 19:7-11.

One of the points of this passage:

The God-breathed Scriptures are sufficient for our lives today.

1. 19:7a  Scripture is perfect, restoring the soul.

The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul;

> The word for law here is torah, hr'AT emphasizes the teaching and instruction that comes from the Word of God.

> "perfect" is tamiym; ~ymiT' (adj.)  basically means to be whole,   complete, sufficient;   (Ps 18:20-24)

> Next the benefit of this perfect complete sufficient instruction;     "restoring the soul"  (hiphil ptc. causative); bWv  to bring back; to restore;  to refresh; to turn away from and turn toward;

2.  19:7b   Scripture is Trustworthy, Imparting Wisdom

> "The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple."

>  Testimony speaks of Scripture as being a divine witness; a declaration of the will of God; brings into focus absolutes; of course God is the source of absolutes;  hd'[e

>  God's sure word has the effect of making wise the simple!

    - simple  = speaks of the naive;  one who does not have the skill to discern that which is false or harmful.

3.   Scripture is right, causing joy. Vs:8a

 > The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart.

 > Precepts brings into focus the fact that God is the definer of duty; the principles, the guidelines for character and conduct.  (piqqudim)

>  And what does it say will be the consequence of being on the right path?? What is the benefit for now? today? tomorrow?

     "rejoicing the heart"  it brings us great joy when believed

4.  Scripture is Pure, Enlightening the eyes  vs:8b

-  the commandment  not a series of suggestions to be taken lightly

-  pure   clear, lucid not mystifying

5.  19:9  The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever;

-  speaks of the respect and awe that we should have for God and His word; takes us to His authority.

-  tied to hearing the word Dt. 4:10

-  clean  speaks of the absence of impurity, defilement, contamination, imperfection

**  There is nothing out there that is as permanent as the Word of God! Nothing!

6.  The judgements of the Lord are true and righteous  vs:9b

Psalm 119:138; 142
