February  20, 2002  Lesson 23

Intro Review:

Ø      7:7-13 The production of the Law and its relationship to sin

7:7  Begins by dealing with another objector's question!

-  "What shall we say then? Is the law sin?"

-  What do we know about the Law?

#1  Rom. 3:20  gives us a knowledge of sin

#2  Rom. 4:15  w/o law there is no violation

#3  Jms  1:22-25  the law is a mirror

7:8 The law as stimulator!

-  But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Law sin is dead.

-  The source of the coveting, these intense desires, is the Sin nature not the commandment!  The law is the stimulator!

In 7:9-11  we see the law as the terminator, it brings separation

7:9  "Once alive apart from the law"

-  this speaks of the time in ones life before being confronted by God's law with all its implications

- The contrast;  but when the commandment came, sin became alive, and I died;

7:10  and this commandment, which was to result in life, proved to result in death for me;

(literal translation )  I found/discovered with ref to me the commandment [content or it] which (was) to result [eij] in life this [commandment] resulted in death.
