Romans Chapter One                                 Lesson 9

Review:

3. Our Responsibility as believers lies with the revealed things.  Dt 29:29

** Revelation equals responsibility!

** So a study of God's will is a call to a study of God's word!

** And if we are going to know His will, the only way is we must know His word.

4. The revealed will of God is all that we need!  2 Tim 3:16-17

> Proposition that we're building on is that the revealed will of God is sufficient for the believer.

Documentation = 2 Tim 3:16-17

#1. The origin of Scripture; "All scripture is inspired by God.."

- God breathed = qeo,pneustoj;  qeoj + pneustoj

- Not new idea in Scripture.  Look at Dt 8:3;

#2. The use of Scripture.

- First it says its what?  Profitable; wvfe,limoj

- Then are listed 4 categories in which this applies.

a. teaching (didaskalia) general word with emphasis on content;  today we might call it curriculum;  Scripture must be the source of all the curriculum,  all doctrine taught.

b. reproof = evlegmo,j basic to expose (Jn 3:20) idea is to point out error; therefore the convicting of sin in the life.

c. correction;  evpano,rqwsij; used of setting a leg; set something or someone upright; it assumes an error that is to be set upright or in order; th4 the idea of correcting, refuting error.

d. for instruction in righteousness = paidei,a; more than just  training it is a total education, step by step process;

total education of the believer in the ways, the vpt of God, so that those ways are then their ways; the norms and standards, the values that God expects of the believer.

#3. The Purpose of Scripture.

"That the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work."

Play on the words in the original.

- a;rtioj = complete, capable, sufficient; ie to meet all of God's demands;  Not only that but the word will make the man of God,

- evxarti,zw fully/completely outfitted and furnished;  fully supplied and equipped;  i.e. for anything that we might face in life.

-  So if we are to be "adequate and fully equipped" in life we must recognize that this is related to having a knowledge of God's will as revealed in Scripture.

As we grow, mature in that revealed word,  it will shape our goals in life, and our attitudes in life and as a result the actions we take.  Actions flow out of thinking!

- The will of God, through the Word of God will aid us in developing and defining our goals and our attitudes in life.

5. Since Scripture is sufficient to Prepare the Believer for life, some considerations, or observations:

a. Must recognize that there is a basic principle of Obedience:

In those areas specifically addressed by the Bible, the revealed commands and principles of God (His moral or directive will) are to be obeyed.

- Some basic guidelines:

   What God says to do, we must do it!

   What God says not to do,  we must not do!

For all the rest your free to make your own decisions guided by the framework of His revealed will.

b. The ramifications of the principle of obedience are more fully recognized when four crucial characteristics of God's moral will are brought into focus.

1. The moral will of God is fully revealed in the Bible.

a. 100% of what God wants us to know and how we're to live to please Him, to bring Him glory, He has already told us.

b. The Bible is to be our final and complete authority for faith and practice.       2 Tim 3:16-17

2. The moral will of God is the expression of the character of God.      Rom 7:12; Rom 12:2

a. Because of this, it produces that same character in the life of the one who obeys it and leads to fullness of life.    Ps 19:7-11.

b. Specific areas where Christ is our example in character:

- we are to be conformed to the image of Christ. Rom 8:29

- Look at 2 Pet 1:4
