Lesson 72

Revelation  - Study of Things to Come

The Eternal State Chapter 22

Review:

7. A reminder of the condition of Salvation  22:14

A distinction is made between those who will be in the Eternal city, in vs:14 and those who are "outside" having failed to wash their robes.

Salvation is symbolically portrayed here by the washing of the robes in the blood of Christ.  cf. 7:14  (same idea)

The context is clearly one of Salvation, one's right to enter the Eternal city and to partake of the tree of life.

It is the infinite cleansing power of the cross work of Christ that provides the basis of forgiveness, provides a new life in Christ;  provides the imputed righteousness necessary to qualify to enter the Eternal State into the presence of God.

Look down at 22:17  This verse exhorts us to NOT leave the book of Rev. without recognizing that the offer of Salvation is still out there, it is still operable.

With 22:15 the contrast, the distinction is once again made between those who have "washed their robes;" have believed in Christ and those who have rejected Christ, unbelievers.

Principle is that the sins mentioned were not forgiven not that they are not forgivable; They never went to the cross, the only place for forgiveness.

- To call someone a dog, expressed the greatest degree of contempt.

* All of these from the dogs to the ones who love lying have been living lives untouched by the grace of God.

8. Reminded of the Personal nature of this book and its source. 22:17

Several significant things here;

#1. 3 names or titles of Christ.

#2. The first reference to the churches since the messages to the 7 churches in ch 2-3.

This verse, for the last time, attests to the importance and honor placed on the word;  the faithful and true words, of vs:6 and 21:5 with the added emphasis on the source of the content given to His messenger

- This last message is directed to the church; not just the 7 churches mentioned in 1:4, detailed in ch. 2-3;  its not just "concerning" them but to all the churches of the C/A.

Do you see the 3 names/titles of Christ?

#1 "I Jesus"  focus on His humanity

#2 "the root and offspring of David."

     #3 "the bright morning star."

- If the Sun = Christ returning and reigning in the Millennium;   as portrayed by the prophet Malachi.

Then Christ as the morning star = Christ at the dawn of this new day returning for His bride, the church, His betrothed at the rapture!

5 times we are reminded in this last message about the "words" of this book;

Do you think that maybe the content of this book is important to God??  Rem: Psalm 138:2 tells us that He has exalted His word above His name.

Not only does our Lord guard the Words of this book but announces Himself as the Witness to the Words.

- vs:18  deals with adding to Scripture!

- vs:19  deals with subtracting from Scripture.

- This is not the first warning against tampering with the Word of God;  Deut 4:2; 12:32;  Prov 30:5-6

Such Scriptures form the very foundation for the widely acclaimed hope of Christ's imminent return.

Some observations on Imminency

The term "Imminence" used to describe the coming of Jesus Christ for the church, His bride, at the rapture, and to declare that it is next on the prophetic program of God.

1) While no one knows the time of Christ 's return, imminency says He may come at any moment and it is possible that He might even come today.    This is the heart of the blessed hope that we have.

2) The rapture is signless, and it will be unannounced and largely unexpected.

3) No clearly prophesied event must transpire prior to the rapture, for this might date the time of His coming.

11. Reminder of the Sustaining power for the church 2:21

- Summarizes the hope that we have and wraps it in Grace as Paul did in Titus 2:11-14
