Lesson 65

Revelation  - Study of Things to Come

The Millennial Reign of Christ - Chapter 20

Review:

20:8 The result is a rebellion

- last phrase tells us the extent of the response he had to his message of deception.

Principle of Doctrine: There is no set of circumstances under which dissatisfaction will not occur; no environment, no matter how good is free of criticism; the extensive response to Satan's deception proves that.

But man's mind/heart will be ready, responsive to Satan's appeal.

- Jer 17:9  still applies sin the sin nature rules the unbeliever

What about the reference to Gog and Magog?? Is it the same as Ezk 38-39?

What this passage is saying is that Satan is going to deceive rulers/leaders and peoples from all over the world and pull them together in a coalition to form this last great revolt.

20:9 The Battle is joined!

- Satan and his armies of the deceived vs the saints!

No sooner has Satan's army been assembled and God acts!

"fire came down from heaven and devoured them."

20:10  Satan's End!

Satan's appeal has run its course; its now time to carry out the sentence passed way back when Satan first fell and was judged.

They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

The death and judgment of the wicked, the UB'r is a continual,  constant torment "forever"  lit.  "to the ages of the ages."

* Dr. Wolvoord: There would be no way possible in the Greek language to state more emphatically the everlasting punishment of the lost than that used here in mentioning both day and night and the expression literally "to the ages of the ages."

Biblical Reality of Eternal Judgment!

Introduction:

These closing chapters of the Bible make it perfectly clear that there is an enormous difference in the future destiny of those who believe in Christ and those who do not.

God has gone to enormous lengths to provide salvation, to provide a way of escape, to provide each one an eternal destiny with Him.

Our objective is to Examine the characteristics of what the Bible teaches about Hell, Sheol, Hades, Gehenna, and the Lake of Fire.  So that we can get a sense of what it's like?  What's in store for those who do not believe in Christ.

1. These 4 terms are not totally synonymous as some try to make them.

- sheol (Heb.) and hades (Gk.) when referring to a place; the residence of the dead; refer to the temporary abode of the dead, temporary that is until the GWTJ.  (2nd resurrection)

- While the terms Gehenna and LOF and Hell refer to the eternal abode of the dead after the GWTJ.

2. Descriptions of Eternal Judgment;  What we can know!

a. Mt 22:13-14  Alternative to accepting the invitation of the King; God invites us through the gospel;  Some respond, most reject and the consequence is found in vs:13-14.

- here it is called  "outer darkness"  (also 8:12; 25:30)

- The contrast in the context of Mat. 22 is between a festive banquet; fellowship with the king or eternal darkness in a place of suffering and despair.

"weeping" suggests great suffering.

"gnashing of teeth" suggests the anger, frustration and  absolute despair of those in judged;

always used and associated with eternal judgment (all by Jesus)

[Mt 8:12; 13:42; 13:50; 25:30; Lk 13:28]

b. Mt 13:41 here it described as a "furnace of fire"

c. Mt 18:8-9  Eternal fire  [lit. the fire to the ages]

d. Mat 3:12; Mark 9:43 "unquenchable fire"
