Lesson 8 July 18

Intro Review:    The Land Covenant

- Extent of the Promised Land = Gen 13:14-17;  15:18-21

- Promise of the Land reiterated to Isaac; Gen 26:3-5 and to Jacob in Gen 28:12-15.

Major Passage; Dt 29-30 with 30:1-10 giving the details, stipulations

Main question??  Is the land of Palestine still ours?

They had just experienced the most dramatic evidence of God's provision and deliverance; but made a fatal mistake;  they doubted God's word.

- That's Numbers 13-14, account of Kadesh-Barnea   Its an account of discipline, of judgment for their failure to believe God's Word and His promise.

Rebellion but no canceling of the covenant, the promise of the land.

- Dt 30:1-10  Here we see God's program for Israel.  We find 3 concepts here that are a part of God's ongoing relationship with Israel;  through out their history.

#1 - Always count on a dispossession for sin.  [consequences for sin]

#2 - Also be a future repentance of the people. (corp)

#3 - Restoration of Israel   - Return of the Messiah.

Key words here; Dispossession; Repentance; Restoration; Return

- Just prior to this context; the restatement of the Palestinian covenant,  Moses gave them a very solemn discourse. 28:63-67.

- When Moses gives this discourse, where are they?  Still in Moab,  have not yet crossed over the Jordan; to possess the land, that comes in later in Josh 1.

#1 - Always count on a dispossession for sin.

- look back at Dt 28:63f

* Discipline is not termination;  God disciplines but he does not terminate what He has promised unconditionally because of who and  what He is with His chosen people Israel or for that matter  within the body of Christ.

#2 - Also will be a future repentance of the people. (corp)  Dt 30:1-2

* Interesting sequence!

1. All that God said is fulfilled;  blessings, cursing

2. They recall those things; remembering of BD;  what God had said;  during their dispossessions.

3. Shubh bWV  "return"  repentance    hwhy =l[

4. Logical results of repentance = obedience; whole heart, whole soul; intensity, completeness;  therefore whole life.

5. In vs:3  "then"  restoration;  regathering from the nations!

#3 - Restoration of Israel and return of the Messiah.  vs:3-8

NOTE:

Some attempt to take Josh 21:43-45 and claim a fulfillment of the promise of the land?

-  Joshua 21  details the land acquired in the conquest not the land promised by the covenant, cp. Numb 34
