Lesson 7, July 11

Rom 9:4-5 helps to answer what is a Jew!

#1 "to whom belongs the adoption";

#2. "and the glory"  this reflects probably what is the greatest miracle of Scripture!

#3. "and the covenants"  plural Abe with its provisions;

Palestinian, Davidic and the New.

#4. "and the giving of the law"  Mosaic law to govern their social, political and religious life.

- with it were the promises of blessing for obedience

#5. "and the (temple) service";  latreia = refers to tabernacle & temple ritual.

Israel had the only God given worship system.

#6. "the promises" not only the things related to the provisions of the covenants but also eschatologically the promise of a coming Messiah.

#7. "whose are the fathers"; the patriarchs, their heritage through  Abe, Isaac and Jacob; a very specific line (rules out the Arabs from the line of blessing apart from faith in Christ)

#8. (last and greatest)  "and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh,"  The Messiah the coming anointed one is from Israel.

So we have 8 fantastic privileges that Israel possessed; so what happened to them; in spite of all of these blessings what has happened to Israel?

Paul says here in verse 6 don't conclude that the Word of God has failed.

vs:7 continues the explanation.; rest of context gives examples; contrast between Ishmael and Isaac; and then Esau and Jacob.

* Jews of Christ's day did not understand this seed with in the seed!

They thought that if they were of the physical line; they had it made; they were heirs of the promise.   Jn 8:31-47

Maybe the nation of Israel needs a wake up call!  Some strong encouragement!

* What do you think that encouragement is called??                                .

What is going to happen??     Ezk 20:38

The Palestinian Covenant   -   LAND

Intro:  - The Nature of this part of the covenant is unconditional therefore eternal.

Usual thinking goes one of 2 ways:

#1 - The "promise of the land" = heaven, the promise of heaven.

#2 - Others say, Yes it is a real, literal promise.  BUT!!

- It is a conditional promise!  Because of Israel's disobedience it is never to be fulfilled.
