Lesson 15 May 19, 2002

Review:

The advantages of this third interpretation of Eph. 5:18 are obvious:

(1)   It puts the focus of the believer's life where it should be--on the Person of Christ.

(2)   It recognizes and explains the difference in terminology used here from that in the Gospel of Luke and Acts.

The Scripture we now possess is sufficient to equip us for every good work                 (2 Tim. 3:16-17).

This passage deals with 3 major points.

#1  The origin of Scripture.

#2  The use of Scripture.

#3  The purpose of Scripture.

#1.  The origin of Scripture; "All scripture is inspired by God.."

#2.  The use of Scripture.

 Profitable

-  Then it lists 4 categories in which this applies.

#1  teaching

#2  reproof

#3  correction;

#4  for instruction in righteousness

#3.  The Purpose of Scripture.

"That the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work."

-  In the Greek text here, there is a play on words between  adequate and equipped;    artioj   +  exartizw

(3)   This interpretation is more in agreement with the tense and voice of the verb in Ephesians 5:18.

(4)   This view agrees with the context of Ephesians better than the  other two views.
