Study of First Peter                                             Lesson 9

Review:

1:9 Peter continues by giving us the basis for the inexpressible joy

obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.

Note that the word for obtaining is an interesting one, komi,zw and it ties to rewards.

- Uses of the word  komi,zw some examples:

#1   2 Cor 5:10  (for production in life, DGP, revealed at JSC)

#2   Eph 6:8   (see once again that what matters in f2 is your mental attitude towards BD and its application in your life not your social status)

#3   1 Pet 5:4  (application is to faithful P/T's)

#4   Heb 10:36

#5   Negative one: Col 3:25

If faith has an end or culmination it must have a beginning!

Point of faith in Christ  --- life f2 -- end is the deliverance i.e. death/rapture either way F/F.

The soul here  yuch,  as it often does is used to refer to the seat of or center of life that transcends the material world. (its immaterial)

Summary Observations

1.  Promise from God is that all who believe in Jesus Christ will obtain as a reward the end of their faith, that is they will ultimately end up face to face with Him.

2.  There are 2 aspects of the soul's deliverance.

First at the point of salvation, as a result of faith in Christ your regenerated, there is a new birth, a canceling of spiritual death.

Second is the end or culmination  f3  when we are delivered face to face to ultimately receive the promised resurrection body like His.

3.  The emphasis of this verse in context is on the f3 deliverance or our glorification.

4.  As we begin to grasp the doctrinal progression from vs:3-9 it should give us great confidence and stability in time regardless of the external pressures and tests we might be facing.

5.  As those who have believed in Christ we are:

a.  Regenerated, which cancelled the spiritual death and now we are new creations in Christ. (vs:3)

b.  Because of the resurrection of  Jesus Christ providing proof of the provision of salvation we have a living hope.  (vs:3)

c.  The inheritance that we have is imperishable, undefiled, unfading, and guarded in heaven for you (vs:4)

d.  That as believers we are protected by the power of God as well as our inheritance. (vs:5)  [points out eternal security that we have and enjoy in Christ]

e.  That portion of our inheritance that is related to rewards will be revealed at the last time,  that is the rapture and JSC (vs:5) also (vs:9)  obtaining as the outcome of your faith.

f.   This is all true even though in time during our life we are distressed by various tests which refine our faith's focus so that we can enjoy inner happiness and contentment even in the midst of the CHP's of life.

1:10-12  Prophets  and Angels Amazed at Our Salvation

With this paragraph Peter is attempting to show to his readers that the spiritual blessings that they have, the provisions that are theirs in Christ are greater than anything envisaged by  the OT prophets or even Angels.

Peter has hit on some important aspects for the believer from the point of salvation, living his life in time and when Christ returns.  All 3 phases of salvation.

the prophets made careful searches and inquiries

Who are the prophets?

When it says they prophesied  what is in view?

- We have a line of prophets from Moses to John the Baptist (with Christ being a special category) and their main function was not to give out prophecy of future events, but to announce to the people God's revelation and to exhort them to obedience to it.

- Nowhere in the context (vs:10-12) does Peter suggest that these prophets questioned the message they were given to communicate but that his point with the statement that they made careful searches and inquiries   that they sought a fuller more complete understanding of the messages they communicated.

- They had info related to the 1st advent (Isa 53), they had much info related to the 2nd advent of Christ.

Peter continues in 1:11 with the personal perplexity of the prophets.

seeking to know  same word as used in vs:10 for inquiry; idea of the word is to investigate and to search for thoroughly

what person or time   Here we have stated the basic dilemma of the prophets

- The question for them,  that they were seeking diligently the answers to is this, Who was to be the Messiah, and secondly what is the nature or characteristic of the time when He was to appear on the scene.

the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.

the Spirit of Christ  is a functional title of God the Holy Spirit

within them  i.e. the prophets of the OT;  Does this refer to the Holy Spirit Indwelling them?

- This is not referring to indwelling them as He does us in the Church age, but to His ministry to these prophets working with their personalities to provide the inspired message God desire to be inscripturated in the cannon.  2 Pet 1:20-21

- Remember the principle of residency of the Holy Spirit is established in John 14:17

was indicating  imperfect active indicative of  dhlo,w  to render evident to the mind, to make clear

as He predicted   this is a temporal participle, the idea is "while predicting"

-  while testifying in advance; who is?  Linked to God the Holy Spirit! The Spirit of Christ.

-  Significance:  this puts the emphasis on God the Holy Spirit's function during inspiration, the giving of the message and the recording of it.

The Holy Spirit through the prophets was testifying in advance to  the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.
