C. Instructions to Elders that is to P-T's (those with the spiritual gift and are prepared)

1. The gift of P/T carries a two fold responsibility as indicated by the title Pastor-Teacher Eph 4:11.

a. teacher - 1 Tim 3:2; 2 Tim 4:1-4;

b. Pastor - protector of the sheep - Titus 1:13; 2:1.

2. The gift of P/T when exercised equips the other gifts within the local church - Eph 4:11-12.

3. Public teaching is to be done by one P/T. Rev 2-3

4. Each P/T is periodically responsible to stir up the gift by studying doctrine related to P/T. 2 Tim 1:6.

5. The P/T's authority (it has bounds) Heb 13:7,17.

a. doesn't mean to be a bully, a tyrant - 1 Pet 5:3.

b. people are not to uncritically accept everything the P/T teaches - Acts 17:10-12.

- need to check against the std of the W.O.G.

c. The P/T must have freedom to teach the W.O.G - Heb 13:17.

d. When a congregation selects a P/T they are also accepting his authority over them - Acts 20:28.

e. The term overseer, which the P/T is called, suggests rank and authority.

f. Sheep do not lead the shepherd, they follow, that is the teaching of the Word.

g. The P/T must have authority to stop error in the church - Titus 1:9.

6. There is a temporal reward for the P/T who rules with excellence - 1 Tim 5:17-18.

7. There is an eternal reward for the P/T who faithfully fulfills his gift - 1 Pet 5:1-4.

8. The P/T's conduct in and out of the pulpit is important - 2 Tim 3:10,11.

a. 1 Pet 5:3 exhorts the P/T to be an example to the flock and to be faithful to doctrine.

b. His pattern of life is to be an example - 1 Tim 4:12.

c. He is not to waste time in the pulpit but to communicate the faith, BD - 1 Tim 6:20.

d. The qualifications/characteristics of a P/T:

1) 1 Tim 3:1-7

2) Titus 1:5-9

3) 1 Pet 5:1-4

D. Factors necessary for a learning situation in a local church.

1. Must be Empowered by God the Holy Spirit: Eph 4:30; 1 Thess 5:19; 1 Cor 3:1-4; 1 Pet 2:1,2; 1 Jn 1:9 (mechanics);

2. Positive volition factor - 1 Thess 2:13.

3. Previous knowledge factor. Heb 5:10-12 (must know the A,B,C's before moving on, BD is built on BD).

4. Repetition of truth factor - Phil 3:1; 2 Pet 3:12,13; 2 Thes 2:5.

5. Teaching content (P-T's responsibility) 2 Tim 3:16-17; the content to be the entire canon of scripture, the whole council of God, not just the Gospel.
