Lesson 34

Intro:

9:27  Daniel's 70th "week";  the last 7's of the 70 groups of 7.

Vs:27 is completely prophetic; it is not history; it is all yet to come.

This is a prophecy dealing with Daniel's people, the Jews, in their final conflict with their last and greatest foe!

1.  A Covenant is made.

The first question that we immediately must answer is just who is the "he"?

This covenant is said to be made "with the many" for one "week";  for one group of 7's therefore for 7 years.

Some observations at this point!

      1.  In order to have the authority to make such a covenant, the GWD must already, by this time, possess the position of head king of the RRE.

      2.  It also says that there must be a nation Israel, a people in their homeland once again.

      3.  This covenant marks the beginning of this 7 year period.

      4.  The language here is very strong and it implies that he will force or impose this agreement on Israel.

      5.  This covenant then can be characterized as a "peace agreement."

      6.  This agreement will make the GWD appear to be a friend of  Israel, but as time moves on he proves that this is not so!

 2.  "but in the middle of the week (seven) he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering;"

From this we see that part of this covenant deals with allowing Israel to reestablish their temple worship, indicated here by "sacrifice and grain offering."

- This sacrifice (bloody) is the offering that typified the future sacrifice of Christ on the cross as the spotless lamb of God;  (Heb 9:14;  1 Pet 1:18-20)

- The meal offering (minchah, bloodless) prophetically typified the sinless humanity of Christ and it pointed to the fact that through Him flow the mercies, the compassion, of God  which Daniel had been seeking on behalf of his people.

Today we see Israel restored as a nation in only a part of the "land" that is promised by the Palestinian covenant.

"In the middle of the seven" after 3 1/2 years he, the GWD, will break the covenant that he made with Israel.

What motivates him to stop the Jewish sacrifices in their Temple?

3.  The 3rd activity of the GWD portrayed here will play a significant role in the establishment of the worship of this head of the RRE.

"and on the wing of abominations (will come) one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction,"

2 important words here that we need to understand if we're to get the nuance of, abominations and desolate; that is to understand God's vpt here.

1st  abominations,  shiqquts = #WQvi   it is always used in some  connection with detestable idolatrous practices either referring to the idols, or to the idolatrous ritual practices

2nd  desolate, the one who makes desolate, shamem = ~mev' po`el ptc which has causative force as does the hiphil

While the po`el stresses the fact that someone has caused here the sanctuary, the altar to be polluted thus rendering it unfit for worship and service for God!

-  It is the very presence of the abomination, the idol, that renders the temple unfit for worship

- The "wing of abominations" would indicate the pinnacle or extreme point of abominations.

4.  The climatic end!

This reign of destruction would continue, "until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate."

      1.  The GWD will have power and will cause horror on the nation and the people of Israel until all the judgment that God had sovereignly decreed has been administered.

      2.  What is referred to here is the time called, the great tribulation by Christ in Mt 24:15-26.

      3.  The one who is mediately the instrument of God's wrath does not escape!  He is himself destroyed. 2 Ths 2:8;  Rev 19:20

      4.  The end is marked by the Lord's return.
