E. Lets look at the question of why years??

- when vs:24 opens with "Seventy sevens (weeks) have been decreed for your people and your holy city."

Arguments for years!

1. Context indicates years; Its in his thinking at this point! 9:1-2

2. If we look at what is being covered by the prophecy, it sure rules out it being days and probably even months.

3. Also as we look at this prophecy, what else has to fit in here?

4. Other prophetic passages demand that we think in terms of years.

Rev 11:1-2 42 months; 3 1/2 years; 13:5

9:24 Where we look at the big picture!

This verse lays out 4 important points.

#1. The time is set out, 490 years.

#2. Who is involved, the people are identified, for your people , the Jew, all of Israel.

#3. The place of focus, "your holy city" - Jerusalem.

#4. The purpose of this 490 year period. (seen in 6 things to be accomplished)

#4. The purpose of this 490 year period. The 6 things that must be accomplished!

#1. "to finish the transgression"

- word for transgression = pasha ` [v;P, basic meaning is to rebel.

- "to finish" indicates to bring to completion, to bring to an end.

#2. "to make an end to sin"

#3. "to make atonement for iniquity"

#4. "to bring in everlasting righteousness"

#5. "to seal up vision and prophecy."

#6. "to anoint the most holy (place)." lit: "to anoint a holy of holies."
