               God's Future Program for Israel

Outline of Dan 9:

1.  Daniel's Discovery  9:1-2

2.  Daniel's Prayer     9:3-19

3.  Daniel's Answer to his prayer  9:20-23

4.  The Prophecy of Seventy Weeks   9:24-27

1.  Daniel's Discovery  9:1-2

9:1  We have some time markers

9:2  We find Daniel oriented himself to time by going to the Word of God.

Look at Jer.  25:8-12   Time in context is before the captivity.

This passage tells us 3 important things:

#1  Why they went into captivity,  reason for the judgment.

#2  He also gave the instrument of the judgment.

#3  He also gave the duration of the judgment.

Some observations related to Daniel's discovery.

1.  When Jeremiah talked about 70 years of captivity and then be returned, Did Daniel take them literally, or did he take them figuratively?

2.  He also realized that the word of Jeremiah promising the return would only be fulfilled on the basis of prayer.

3.  Daniel recognized that confession is the path to restoration.

2.  Daniel's Prayer     9:3-19

First of all we see Daniel's attitude of dedication;  "I gave my attention to the Lord God";

Second there was an attitude of persistence.

There is also an external aspect to his preparation and this is seen in the last phrase, a direct result of his MA, his orientation to God!   "with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes."

The Prayer itself begins with vs:4

It revolves around 4 themes:

#1  Recognition of the person and character of YHWH; vs:4

       #2  Confession;  vs:5-11

#3  The calamity which has come upon them  vs:12-14

       #4  The petition made;  vs:15-19
