Lesson 11
The
Brain Soul Complex
1 Cor 2:9-16 Study of Revelation and Illumination and
its importance to us in acquiring true wisdom
Review:
Paul
gives us three features of divine revelation.
1. God's revelation is not in words chosen by
men.
(neg) "not in words taught by human wisdom."
2. God's revelation is in words chosen by God
the Holy Spirit.
but in those taught by the Spirit"
This is
referring to the Biblical Doctrine of Inspiration - Verbal
2 Tim
3. The words of Scripture are a
perfect match for the truth that they convey
"combining spiritual (thoughts) with spiritual (words)"
For Paul
then at this point is telling them that what he speaks to them through 1 Cor, this epistle expresses perfectly what God revealed to
him to give to them. (1 Cor
-
H-S reveals
- H-S inspires
- deals with the giving
- deals with man recording
the of the truth the truth revealed
- Truth from God's mind to - Truth from Paul's mind to His Paul's mind vocabulary to put into
Scripture
*** The fact that God chose to reveal truth
and that He did so through words perfectly matched in the original provides the basis and conviction for expository
preaching, which I believe is the only method that fully honors the inspiration
of Scripture.
Paul gives the UB'r , the one perishing a
new name yuciko.j the
natural or soulish man
- An example of this is in Jas 3:15
- Notice where the psuchikos
type is at home, on the earth and with Satan's system the kosmos with all of
its counterfeits
It is also a word that is used to indicate being devoid
of the Holy Spirit - Jude 19
Being a psuchikos type
leads to deficiencies:
1. "he does not
accept the things of the Spirit of God" (2:14a)
2.
He is unable to know or understand, that is, there is a basic failure to
understand the spiritual implications and impact of what is read or heard??
3. The reason for this inability = the
absence of the Holy Spirit!
"because they are spiritually appraised."
appraised (used once here and 2x in vs:15)
avnakri,nw; basic is to judge again; to examine;
to inquire
not just examine but to examine, evaluate something
and form conclusions
Being
minus the Holy Spirit, one does not have the spiritual assets, the tools to
investigate and make right conclusions related to any spiritual truth.
2:15-16 The
Spiritual
"But he who is spiritual appraises all
things,"
spiritual = pneumatiko,j - iko,j ending
is used to say "is characterized by"
What is
the dominant feature of the spiritual Believer??
*** So
the Spiritual, pneumatikos, believer is one who is not only indwelt by Holy
Spirit but is also empowered by Holy Spirit.
The
problem here is that the Corinthian Bel's were
indwelt but not in fellowship therefore not enabled by the Spirit.
"He who is spiritual" responds
differently to the Word.
"He appraises all things"
"yet he himself is appraised by no man."
Is this saying that he, the
spiritual man, is a law unto himself??
Key here
is we need to Identify who it is that is evaluating the "spiritual man".
This is
further reinforced by the statement of 2:16 where Paul further develops the
reason the Believer is not subject to man's judgment in spiritual things.
First we
need to note that
1 - Major premise; 2 - Minor premise; 3 - Conclusion.
MAJOR: NO ONE CAN INSTRUCT GOD!
MINOR: WE HAVE THE MIND OF CHRIST, GOD'S MIND
CONCL: NO ONE CAN INSTRUCT US!
This
simply says that He doesn't need our advice.
He is not taught
or counseled by His creatures.
This is the Major premise!!
Notice the Minor premise; "but we have the mind of Christ."
We have the thinking, the
vpt, the standards, the mind of Christ.
Experientially
as we appropriate that revealed wisdom under the ministry of the H/S then we
will begin to look at life from our Savior's point of view, having His values,
His desires being an integral part of our mind, our thinking. Comes as the Holy Spirit
fills us with Christ.
What's the
conclusion for these two premises??
Answer:
in 2:15b "... he himself is
appraised of no man."
Note:
the "fleshly" believer while in that state would also not be able to
evaluate the spiritual man; being not controlled by H-S.
This is
not the logic of arrogance but is spiritual logic that simply says:
- True
wisdom is God's wisdom. Its from Him!! Isn't it??
- In the
scriptures we possess God's wisdom.
- Therefore How can we reject that wisdom,
reject God's Truth, and still examine, appraise, or instruct those who possess
it.
Whether
the one in view is Psuchikos, the natural, the soulish man or the pneumatikos, the spiritual man, what has
been the emphasis?
How they
responded to God's revealed wisdom, their attitude towards the Word.
