Lesson 26  February 8, 2004

Next The Fall of Satan  Ezk 28; Isa 14

This Takes us Back to Square One - Eternity past  (clearly after the decree)

In Eternity past, everything has been going great;  one will!

The origin of sin as to the 1st case in existence, as far as we know, from revelation is with the challenge of God's will by Satan.

Need to look at Ezk. 28:11-19 to get the picture!

Overview:   Ezk. 28 the issues in view.

1.  God created a being, superior to all others, designated that one,  "an anointed cherub"  as His administrator.

2.   Satan (not his name at this point; Lucifer, from latin for light bearer;  Isa 14:12  star of the morning; lit day star);  Satan, Lucifer, challenged God's will!

3.   With the challenge and rejection of God's will, we have the entrance also of confusion and disorder.

4.   God responded to that rebellion!  He judged Satan!

Advent of time;  the creation of man and his habitation!

- In doing so God said that I will prove through human history; with creatures created in my image, with volition, with the ability to think, I will prove that MY way, My will is best!

5.  God put man in the garden, in perfect environment, he was lacking in nothing; had a total grace provision!

6.  In the midst of that garden God put a tree.

7.  Satan came into the garden one day with an objective; I would like to influence the thinking and therefore the actions of man.

8.  On the other hand YHWH came in the cool of the evening, taught Bible class; providing them with what they needed to continually affirm His will.

9.  We know from the account in Gen. 3 that Eve eventually responded to the deception of Satan and gave to her husband, and he ate.

10. Where or how can there be true unity?  Simply if there is acceptance of a common will!

Knowing your enemy - The Fall of Satan  Ezk 28:1-19

Ø      This passage breaks down into 2 parts; actually 2 separate prophecies.

1. vs:1-10 is addressed to the "leader" of Tyre. (28:2)

2. vs:11-19 is addressed to the "king" of Tyre.  (28:12)

What is said in the first 10 verses of the leader, the Prince of Tyre could be said of any man!

But when you get to vs:11-19 you get statements that could not be true of all men!

Principles related to Prophecy; Telescope Principle

   1.  Have something said about a person or about a person historically.

   2.  What is said is telescoped out to a future application to another person. (here it actually goes back)

   3. Examples:

- Isa. 7:14 prophecy of the virgin conception;

Matt. 1:23 spoken of Jesus by an angel to Joseph.

- Ps 22:1 is from the mouth of David, from his own experience

But in Mt 27:46 we see this same thing spoken by Jesus Christ while on the cross

- Hos. 11:1 statement made of Israel (nation) Ex. 4:22 "Israel is my son, My firstborn."

but in Mt 2:15 is made of Jesus

- Ps 16:7-11  spoken by David of his situation at that point

In Acts 2:22-28 it is applied to Jesus Christ

- Moses in Deut. 18:15 makes a statement about a prophet to succeed him.

In Acts 3:22-23 it is applied to Jesus Christ.

What's the common thread here from an interpretation standpoint?

Often it takes the NT passage to illuminate and make clear the OT passage.  To reinforce it.

Ø      Ezk. 28:11-19

There is a common phrase in vs:1 and 11;  "the word of the Lord came to me saying," gives us the source of the prophecy; not the imagination of man but revelation from God.

Ø      Begin examining the prophecy.

28:12 "Son of man, (Ezk the prophet), take up a lamentation over the King of Tyre and say to him,..."

While this prophecy vs:11-19 really deals with the real power behind the ruler, the prince of Tyre.

We have a similar situation in Mt 16:21-23 in an incident between Jesus and Peter. Some of the sternest words spoken by Jesus to anyone during His earthly ministry.

Ø      Initial status of Satan or should say Lucifer.

So when we get down here to vs:12 and it says, "You had the seal of perfection,.."

The emphatic "you" refers to the motivator, the real power behind this ruler or prince of Tyre.

"You had the seal of perfection."  Seal = full measure; all that you could be within the highest order of created beings.  (angels)

We next are given some specific characteristics; (initial state)

"full of wisdom"   (chokmah)  hmkx  basic to possess and skillfully use facts.  Not OmSc!

"Perfect in beauty"

- It says here that he (Lucifer) is a creature that is fully, wholly all that a created being could be, with reference to intelligence, skill, and beauty!

Ø      What were his functions?  What was he to do?

1. He was to operate under submission to the God's will!

      "I placed you there"  (vs:14b)

2. He was to operate in God's will as a "priest."

"every precious stone was your covering;"  (vs:13)

-  These stones indicate his high position among the angels; highest and most glorious of all created beings!

-  The link to God's rule is seen in vs:14;  "You were on the holy mountain of God."

-  There's another thing that is associated with what he is  supposed to do with in the gov't of God!  vs:14      "You walked in the midst of the stones of fire,"
